Delt Talks Videos and Discussion Questions

Below, you’ll find a collection of TedTalks broken down into categories. You can select a category that interests you as an individual or as a chapter or new member group. These videos are a great way to learn about something new, think about something critically, and spark new discussions amongst brothers. The videos vary in length and they are all accompanied by discussion questions to reflect on after watching the video. Relationships

As members of Delta Tau Delta, you’ll interact on a regular basis with your fraternity brothers, other members of the Greek community, faculty, staff, administration, your fellow students, community members, employers, family, and friends. It’s important to make sure that we are giving each of these relationships time and consideration and also to learn more about the ways in which we can make these relationships the most mutually beneficial that they can be. The videos in this category will help you reflect on the various relationships you have in your life.

Pamela Meyer – How to Spot a Liar

  • How did the talk make you feel?
  • Do you think it’s true that we are all “liars?”

  • How does lying align/not align with your personal values? Chapter values?
  • How can lying be harmful to the organization?

    Margaret Heffernan – Dare to Disagree

    • What did you think of this talk?
    • Do you have a disconfirming thinker in your life? In your chapter?
    • Why is it hard for us to work with others who disagree with us?
    • How can we use this idea in our chapter when we are making decisions?
    • What do you do when you find out that you’re wrong?

    Leadership

    As members of Delta Tau Delta, whether you take on an elected position or not, you will inevitably find yourself in a leadership role, formal or informal within your chapter, community, classes, or at work. It’s important for us to make sure we understand who we are as leaders, how we can be better leaders, and what it really means to lead. The videos in this category will help illustrate different types of leadership, why we feel loyal to certain types of leaders, and how we might learn how to be best leaders we can be.

    Simon Sinek – Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe

    • What did you think of the concepts presented in this talk?
    • How are some of the ideas of leadership connected to our chapter?
    • Can you think of a good chapter or community leader that has made you feel safe? What were that person’s best attributes?
    • How can we make sure the members in our chapter feel positive about their leadership?

    Brene Brown - The Power of Vulnerability

    • What do you think about the idea that it can be powerful to be vulnerable?
    • Have you ever been told not to be vulnerable as a man? Why can that be problematic?
    • Can you think of a time when you have chosen to be vulnerable and it didn’t go well? How did that make you feel?
    • How can we make our chapters a safe place to be vulnerable?

    Mark Bezos – A Life Lesson from a Volunteer Firefighter

    • How does Mark display leadership?
    • Why do we sometimes forget to recognize the small things as heroic?
    • Does a leader need a title or recognition?
    • How can we make a difference by living our Delt values? How can we do this every day?
    • Is validation an important part of leadership or doing things for others?
    • Can you think of someone in your chapter who does the “small things” all the time that go unnoticed?

    Ideas that Spark Social Change

    Sometimes in organizations, especially fraternities and sororities, we can get stuck in certain ways of thinking. While we want to respect and celebrate our traditions and rituals, it’s also important for us to think about new, creative ways that we can approach problems, projects, and other challenges we might face as a chapter. The videos in this category will challenge you to think differently about everyday situations, to be creative in your problem-solving, and to simply acknowledge that there may be other ways of approaching things that we’ve never considered.

    Confidence

    As a member of Delta Tau Delta, you may find yourself in situations, where you’re speaking public or leading a program or conversation with your brothers. It’s important to develop self-confidence and learn about tools and resources to help you lead confidently. This category of videos will outline steps and strategies that you can utilize to develop your personal confidence.

    Amy Cuddy – Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are

    • How does this approach relate to leadership? To class presentations? To everyday interactions?
    • How might concept be helpful in a job interview?
    • What are your initial thoughts about her thoughts around body language and its power?
    • How might you be able to implement what you’ve learned from this video into your role as a leader? As a student?
    • Can you think of other brothers in your chapter that could benefit from this message?

    • Try this concept at some point in the next week and see if it makes a difference.

    Safwat Saleem – Why I Keep Speaking Up, Even When People Mock My Accent

    • How can we examine our ideas about what is “normal” as it relates to our recruitment practices?
    • How can we create an environment in our chapter where normal isn’t defined in one way or one perspective?
    • How can we support our brothers who might be experiencing discrimination because of something that others might feel is “different?”
    • How can we help in breaking stereotypes? Think about the events we hold or host. Think about Road programs. Think about chapter/campus traditions.
    • How do you define “normal” as a person? How do we define “normal” in Greek Life?

    Carol Dweck – The Power of Believing That You Can Improve

    • How do we approach errors of mistakes within our chapter? How could we approach them differently?

    Multicultural Competency

    As members of any community, we will all be working with and around people that have different personal stories, celebrate different religions, have a sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, that is different than our own. It’s important as members of Delta Tau Delta to continue to develop our multicultural competencies. This development is one that never ends and the videos in this category will help you reflect on your multicultural competency.

    Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – The Danger of a Single Story

    • What are your initial thoughts about the video?
    • How can having a single idea or single story about a group of people be dangerous?
    • Can you think of a time when you had an idea about a person that was completely wrong?
    • Why do we have these singular ideas about people and places?
    • How does the media we are exposed to impact our ideas about people and places?

    Health and Wellness

    There are many different ways we can discuss health and wellness when it comes to self-care. As fraternity men, you will often find yourselves with many responsibilities to balance, and your personal health and wellness can sometimes become less of a priority. The videos in this category might help you to think through how to strategize for taking care of yourself even during the most stressful of times.

    • How can we, as Delts, help to remove the stigma that exists around taking care of our mental health?

    Jacqueline Way – How to be Happy Every Day: It Will Change the World

    • Can you recall the last time you gave back to someone or to an organization?

    • Why does it make us feel good to give back to others?
    • As a Greek organization focused on service, how can we make the connection between giving back and the happiness of our members?
